This is an excerpt from the earliest 'Legal' style notebook from 1978. When out and about at gigs and the like Rob would jot down expenditure, new contacts and random ideas in small spiral notebooks. He would then transfer important information to these larger notebooks at home. This particular book deals mainly with the release of 'An Ideal for Living' on twelve inch, and Joy Division's first gigs with Rob at the helm. Here Rob has sketched out a rudimentary version of the 'An Ideal For Living' sleeve. The finished sleeve was designed by Steve McGarry (pictured with Rob on the passport photo on the left), who posted the following on the Manchester District Music Archive website: 'Rob already had the scaffolding idea in mind, and we scouted the Fountain Street location together to discuss what the finished thing would look like. He wasn't with me for the photoshoot, so we must have agreed beforehand exactly how it would look.' Thanks to MDMArchive: www.mdmarchive.co.uk
